There are almost 1.2 million cases reported in 44 countries of chikungunya virus. Chikungunya virus causes chikungunya which leads to sudden symptoms of fever after 2-4 days of exposure. It accompanies with joint pain which lasts for weeks or months. The virus is transmitted in humans by two mosquito species of the genus Aedes. A. albopictus and A. aegypti are the two species of mosquito responsible for the transmission of disease in humans. 

The best method known to prevent it includes control in breeding and spread of mosquitoes. Various other methods include using mosquito nets and destroying the breeding places of the mosquito. The symptoms also include fatigue, chills, joint pain, and headache. Chikungunya fever results into acute illness and a chronic phase too.

Recently, a group of scientists at Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s, have reported a big panel of antibody treatments for the disease. The team headed by James Crowe, M.D., and Ann Scott Carell Professor and director of the Vanderbilt Vaccine Center. The team has come up with treatment options for chikungunya by developing antibodies against the virus. 

By the method named “needle in a haystick” by Crowe, which is developed at Vanderbilt, the team pulls out the B-cells from the blood of the infected person and make antibody drugs. The genes of the cells producing antibodies are pulled out from the infected blood once it starts making antibodies. 

Development of the drug is still underway and needs to be tested in humans to understand its effects.
