A simple new way of cancer detection

A new simple RNA test from blood platelets has been explored for cancer detection. Researchers claim to have identified cancer with 96% accuracy by using this new method. Early stage detection of cancer is important for its mitigation. This new easy and quick method of detecting, classifying, and pinpointing the cancer location is being studied by the researchers at the Umea University at Sweden.

The researchers have studied a blood test method of biopsy to detect cancer. All forms of cancer were identified by the method which shows that blood based biopsies can be used as prospective method for early detection of cancer. The researchers at Umea University did the study in collaboration with the Netherlands and US based researchers. The RNA tests of platelets were used for detecting cancer.

Blood samples of 283 participants were studied out of which 228 had some form of cancer while the rest 55 did not have cancer. Comparing the RNA profiles of the blood samples, researchers were able to identify the presence of cancer with 96% accuracy. Around 39 cases with early detection of cancer was 100% identified by the method.

Various follow-up tests also identified tumor origin with 71% accuracy in patients with lung, pancreas, liver, brain, and breast cancer. The method was identified as a new, quick method for cancer detection in patients.
