Coffee consumption helps in averting colon cancer relapse

Coffee consumption helps in averting colon cancer relapse

Recent study shows regular consumption of coffee can help in aversion of colon cancer in treated patients. The patients treated by surgery and chemotherapy with colon cancer showed benefits after consuming  more than 4 cups of coffee in a day. The study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology shows that 42% of the patients showed less chances of cancer relapse when compared to non-coffee drinkers.

The study included around 1000 patients who submitted filled dietary questionnaires. The questionnaires were filled during chemotherapy and after a year of therapy. The study showed that patients who consumed coffee were seen to be at a lower risk of cancer relapse and had higher chances of survival. In stage III patients, the cancer was seen in the lymph nodes around the original tumor but no signs of further metastasis.

A confirmed study is important to use the method for recommendation in patients. Coffee is already known for its various protective effects against various cancers and the present research showed effectiveness against relapse. Further studies would be focused towards analyzing solely the effect of caffeine. This is due to its effect on type 2 diabetes, which is commonly associated with obesity.

Apart from drinking coffee, other implications like exercising and eating healthy can also reduce the risk of diabetes and cancers associated with it.
