The polypeptide hormone Relaxin is produced in female body by the corpus luteum of ovary, placenta, decidua, chorion during pregnancy. It plays paracrine roles in human body and in also produced in males in the prostrate. This hormone is specifically produced in other animals as well, and is used for specifically pregnancy detection.

However, it is useful for other functions as well such as its effects on dilation of blood vessels, collagen metabolism, enhances angiogenesis, renal vasodilator. With recent researches, there are a number of usages that this hormone has.

How is this hormone useful?

Apart from being merely a pregnancy hormone secreted in female body, there are a number of usages it has that makes sure that post pregnancy stage, it has other functions.

This hormone is useful in detecting difference between pregnancy of female dogs and pseudopregnancy. This relaxin hormone is useful for warming of the body and softening of pelvic ligaments. This helps in labor process in women and muscular relaxation of the pelvic area. For people having acute heart issues, this hormone relaxin is useful in mitigating the effects. As a matter of fact, heart patients who have been given this relaxin, has survived heart failures.
