Known in medicinal terms as dinoprostone, the prostaglandin E2, is from a group of hormone like substances which participates in a number of bodily functions that include relaxation and contraction of muscles, changes in position of blood vessels, modulation in inflammation related areas and controlling of blood pressure in humans. As a matter of fact, in cells, arachidonic acid is changed into prostaglandin E2 by means of prostaglandin E synthases and COX enzymes.

Usages of prostaglandin E2:

As per pharmaceutical standards, this hormone is used as an oxytocic to help in evacuation of uterus in case of abortion. This also helps in preparing the cervix prior to induction of labor and also helps in treatment of hydatidiform mole that can be given by both intracervical and intravaginal means. When such gels are used, labor starts within a period of 6 to 12 hours. However, such gels are harmful for menstrual cycle of women and can cause cramps. It can cause heavy bleeding during periods, and in case of inhibitors, it only helps in reducing symptoms of this pain.
